Showcase Point ScreenShowcase Point is a showcase for website showcases / galleries all over the world which contains a lot of nice CSS showcases, flash showcases and mixed showcases.

Started in October 2007, although the site doesn’t get a lot of traffic, it does boast a Google PR of 5, and Alexa rank of approximately 350K range, and over 1000 backlinks.

The site is powered by Worpdress with its own custom theme which should make it easy to update and manage.

There is 1 week remaining for the auction, but with a BIN of $1,000 this one could go quick.

  • End of Domain Tasting?

DomainTools writes about news from a confidential informant who says that Google may stop monetizing domains that are less than 5 days old.

Domain Tasting is the loophole that many people exploit to profit from domains without even paying for them. After registering a domain, you have up to 5 days to cancel the purchase, in which time you can host the site and see if it it receives any traffic and how it performs with ads.

With Google potentially putting an end to the ability to monetize domains less than 5 days old, this would remove the ability of tasters to profit from domains they have no intention of registering, or even to test the viability of domains as a revenue source without at least paying a 1 year registration fee.

I certainly hope the news is true, but we’ll have to wait and see.

CLF ScreenshotVactions are big business, from research to booking, to supplies, and what to do while you’re on vacation people spend a lot time and money for the ideal vacation.

CruiseLineFans is a community for cruise line vacationers, with over 10K members, and close to 1M posts a very active community. The site currently has about 50K unique visitors a month, turning 300K pageviews.

Although the $110K bin seems a little extreme (the site is currently generating about $2K/month in revenue), the potential for growth makes this deserving of a little attention, especially if you can pick it up on the cheap.

  • The Dangers of Buying a Blog

An interesting post over at Devlounge, about traffic levels dropping after the sale of a blog. The headline … “a site will lose up to a third of its traffic after being sold.”

Whilst the post admits that this is a generalization, it seems to merit consideration when deciding how much to pay for a blog you are looking to buy.

Devlounge itself was acquired a few months ago by Splashpress Media, who have a lot of experience in buy blogs, and whilst this can’t be considered a scientific study their experience is probably very close to the norm and not the exception.

Blogs traffic is understandably tied to the blog authors, their personalities defines they style of the blog, and these celebrities gather their own little following. When the site changes hand, the followers may move on with the original authors, and the style of the blog will inevitably change with new people in charge. The decline can be eased by having the original authors stay one and help with the transition, make a few posts, and advice on style and content.

At the end of the day however the Blog is now yours, you must stamp your style on it and build a following of your own.

Whilst this drop is less likely with other types of sites, which are less personality driven, it is worth thinking about how you will keep your users with you as you bring your own style and method of operations to the site.

  • Fusu - The Domain Stock Exchange - Is Now Public

FUSU LogoWell this is something new for those interested in owning a part of the Internet.

The worlds first Domain Stock Exchange is now in public beta. Fusu allows participants to liquidate a fraction of their domain to the market and immediately receive money without having to give up control of the website. You can list upto 45% of your domain on the public market.

On Fusu, holders of a premium domain (i.e Vodka.com) can devote a fraction of their domain to the market and immediately get money out of it without having to give up its control at any time. In return, stockholders in the domain name will get their share in future sales or advertising revenues generated by the domain name.

I’m not exactly sure how this all works yet, after you’ve purchased a share of a domain what exactly do you get, except for the ability to resell the shares to other people? Their website claims, “By being a shareholders in today’s best domains, you participate directly”:

    • in the increase of domain valuations,
    • in parking revenue, and
    • in the sale of premium domains.

Does that mean if I list my domain with the Exchange that I have to have it parked with them?

Then off course you have the fees, don’t all exchanges have fees, yes you pay the Exchange for the privilige of buy and selling the domain shares.

It certainly sounds like an interesting idea, but I’d want to see it running before committing to listing my domains.

Saw an interesting list of domains available for sale (not auction) at Sitepoint, among the list are a few promising ones:

    • WidgetSponsors.com ($100)
    • CSSboard.com ($300)
    • WearableWeb.com ($100) — Could be a very hot sector, been promised for a long time, but wearable computing seems to be coming of age.
    • Viddys.com ($200) — A great name for Video content awards site.
    • AppSponsor.com and AppSponsors.com ($400 each or $700 for both)

    Reasonably priced, and very brandable.
